Large Animal Emergency Rescue

Several SART partners offer technical large animal emergency rescue courses (TLAER) in the early part of 2007. Taught by Tomas and Rebecca Gimenez they cover everything from emergency field decontamination to mud rescue techniques to helicopter operations. The American Horse Council estimates the horse population in Florida, by the way, at half-a-million animals (www.floridahorse.com).

Southwest Chapter Hardens HQ Building

The Southwest Florida Red Cross Chapter recently completed an extensive “hardening” of its facilities with concrete walls and a steel roof. The upgraded structure is designed to withstand 150 mph winds. But there is more to the Southwest story…. Extensive training is available from this chapter for entry-level and experienced Red Cross volunteers. It is only 4 ½ months until hurricane season!.

The Southwest Florida Red Cross headquarters is now able to withstand 150 mph wind.

Florida’s vegetables are harvested by migrant labor, men and women who have special needs in disaster relief.

A Very Special Advisory Board Meeting

The March meeting of the SART Advisory Board will hold a few surprises, because it begins immediately following a 48-hour live training event held as a "planned response to a local disaster." The event will test the Florida SART system’s ability to coordinate and respond (as appropriate) to a disaster. Expect an update on NASAAEP the National Alliance of State Animal and Agricultural Emergency Programs, which has a formation meeting in Orlando this month.
