July’s been
a somewhat tedious month although we did have some excitement with Alberto
splashing his way through the Gulf didn’t we?
For your
reading pleasure this month, we have assembled a collection of Florida SART
updates on training requirements, posted documents, and trivia contest winners.
Many thanks again to those whose submissions were received for the trivia
contest.
Also
included are some newly discovered Internet resources.
Keep moving
on your preparedness plans (it’s not too late to put your kits and plans
together!) and we shall see you in August!

SART Field Responder Training Requirements
An
important stride was made by SART toward becoming NIMS compliant. Following a
discussion and recommendation from the Curriculum Committee at June’s Advisory
Board meeting, a vote was conducted among board members to determine whether or
not to require successful completion of ICS 100, ICS 200, and IS 700 incident
command system courses.
The vote
unanimously supported requiring all field responders to show proof of
successful passage of the abovenamed three incident command system courses.
There are several course variations and prefixes that are available: FEMA,
Division of Forestry, USDA, etc. There is no current stipulation on whose
course is preferred. FEMA courses are convenient, self-paced, and online.
Forestry courses are more hands on. FEMA courses can be accessed at http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/crslist.asp.
USDA courses are available through the FL SART Web site at http://www.flsart.org/library/atm_sart.htm.
The Florida Division of Forestry course calendar is online at http://www.fl-dof.com/training_education/training_schedule.html.
Proof of
successful completion includes a copy of the completion certificate or a letter
from the granting agency/organization stating completion was successful and a
certificate will be mailed.
This
training requirement is effective immediately, so do not delay in completing
your coursework.
NIMS, or
the National Incident Management System, has set forth year-by-year compliance
requirements for states who wish to be reimbursed with federal emergency funds.
For more
information on this field responder requirement, you may contact Dr. Greg
Christy, Emergency Coordinating Officer for ESF17 and SART Advisory Board
Co-Chair.

Trivia Contest Winners
Two entries
into June’s trivia contest sported correct answers. Being that only two had
correct answers (and that we were feeling generous J), we have decided to award authors
of the two entries SART goodie bags.
Congratulations
to Ms. Alexandra Taylor of Milton and Mr. Martin Allen of
North
Port
for successfully solving the quiz!
For those
who missed the question, readers were challenged to name three of the five
hurricane names retired at the conclusion of the 2005 hurricane season. Answers
could be selected from Dennis, Katrina, Wilma, Stan, and Rita. These storms,
all players in the historic 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, were retired by the
international hurricane committee of the World Meteorological Organization.

of the Month!
Do 1 Thing
Do
1 Thing is a 12-month preparedness program developed by a collaboration of
governments and nongovernmental organizations in three counties in
Michigan
. It focuses on
a different area of emergency preparedness each month and provides a range of
preparedness options for each topic. It is designed to improve community
disaster resiliency by moving individuals through the process of disaster
