Florida SARC Small Animal Emergency Sheltering Course - Level 1 - Awareness
The Florida State Animal Response Coalition in partnerships w/ the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center, Hillsborough County Emergency Management, FDACS & FL SART are pleased to offer a grant funded, FDME certified training course. An Awareness Level Small Animal Disaster and Emergency Sheltering Course for Hillsborough County, and the surrounding communities in Tampa Bay.
Prerequisites: Age 18+
*OPEN TO THE PUBLIC / GOVERMENT EMPLOYEES GIVEN SEATING PRIORITY
This Awareness Level (Level 1) class will give you the knowledge, expertise and practical experience you need to work in an emergency animal shelter.
This introductory course of Emergency Animal Sheltering covers:
The Disaster Process
Understanding how disasters are managed
Preparing for Deployment
Checklists and considerations so you are ready when needed
Building a Temporary Emergency Shelter
Strategies for shelter location and design, basic equipment assembly
Animal Behaviors
General understanding of animal behaviors including
facial expressions and stresses
Daily Care
Skills and procedures to provide daily care of animals
Diseases and Parasites
Processes and skills for recognizing and reporting illness
Cleaning and Disinfecting
Consideration procedures and options to limit spread of disease
Tear Down & Clean Up
Processes during tear down to improve readiness for the next disaster
