Awareness (Level 1) Small Animal Emergency Sheltering

This is the introductory level of emergency animal sheltering. Modules include:

  • The Disaster Process - Understanding how disasters are managed.
  • Preparing for Deployment - Checklists and considerations so you are ready when needed.
  • Building a Temporary Emergency Shelter - Strategies for shelter location and design. Basic equipment assembly.
  • Animal Behaviors - General understand of animal behaviors, facial expressions, stresses, and much more.
  • Daily Care - Skills and procedures to provide daily care of animals.
  • Diseases & Parasites - Processes and skills for recognizing and reporting illness.
  • Cleaning & Disinfecting - Considerations to limit spread of disease. Procedures and options.
  • Tear Down & Cleanup - Processes during tear down to improve readiness for the next disaster.

The second level class details the leadership roles and  strategic considerations of emergency animal shelters. Modules include:

  • Incident Command System - How it is used in shelter operations
  • Biosecurity & Decontamination - Includes understanding pathogens and concepts of decontamination
  • Facility Design Considerations - Including locations, resources, and facility options
  • Leadership Roles - Review Lead roles & their responsibilities in an emergency shelter.

    • Donation Coordination
    • Supply & Logistics
    • Reunification
    • Kennel Lead
    • Transport
  • Supervising Volunteers in emergencies
